Current-driven instabilities in astrophysical jets Non linear development

چکیده
The non linear development of instabilities driven by the presence of an electric current is investigated for magnetized jets using 3-dimensional MHD simulations. General magnetic equilibria for cold supermagnetosonic jets with constant velocity are considered in order to study the influence of the initial configuration on the non linear evolution. It is found that the current density is redistributed within the inner part of the jet radius with a characteristic time scale and an axial wavelength in agreement with the linear analysis. For equilibria having a pitch profile that increases with radius, an internal helical ribbon with a high current density is forming. It gives rise to considerable dissipation which is radially localized, and may result in heating and particle acceleration within the jet.

Microphysics of Cosmic Ray Driven Plasma Instabilities
Energetic nonthermal particles (cosmic rays, CRs) are accelerated in supernova remnants, relativistic jets and other astrophysical objects. The CR energy density is typically comparable with that of the thermal components and magnetic fields. In this review we discuss mechanisms of magnetic field amplification due to instabilities induced by CRs. We derive CR kinetic and magnetohydrodynamic equ...

Current-driven instabilities of force-free screw pinches are studied for a large variety of magnetic configurations by means of a global linear analysis in an ideal MHD framework. The magnetic pitch, P = rBz/Bφ, in particular its value on the axis, P0, essentially determines the growth rate of the fastest growing kink instability and allows to identify two regimes. In the large pitch regime, re...
متن کاملStructure and Stability of Keplerian MHD Jets
MHD jet equilibria that depend on source properties are obtained using a simplified model for stationary, axisymmetric and rotating magnetized outflows (Lery et al. Lery et al. 1998,Lery et al. 1999a). The present rotation laws are more complex than previously considered and include a Keplerian disc. The ensuing jets have a dense, current-carrying central core surrounded by an outer collar with...
متن کاملThe Role of Macroscopic and Microscopic Jet Instabilities
Relativistic jets, be they Poynting flux or kinetic flux dominated, are current driven (CD) and/or Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) velocity shear driven unstable. These macroscopic MHD instabilities may be responsible for some of the observed larger scale twisted jet structures and typically do not disrupt jets on less than kiloparsec scales. Here I review our understanding of the jet properties that wil...

Context. Flow-induced instabilities are relevant for the storage and dynamics of magnetic fields in stellar convection zones and possibly also in other astrophysical contexts. Aims. We continue the study started in the first paper of this series by considering the stability properties of longitudinal flows along magnetic flux tubes. Methods. A linear stability analysis was carried out to determ...
